How much did changing culture contribute to modern economic growth? I use large language models to read 23,000 historical books and construct an Innovation Wedge measuring cultural resistance to new ideas. In a calibrated growth model, its decline explains two-thirds of the first sustained acceleration in productivity growth between 1500 and 1700.

How should governments discount costs and benefits far into the future? We argue that pure time preference may itself decline across generations and use the UK Green Book to show how this changes long-horizon appraisal.

How much productivity is lost because resources are misallocated in the oil industry, and how much is caused by tax policy? Using global field-level data from 1900–2023, we find that misallocation is substantial and that variation in revenue tax rates explains more than half of it, primarily by distorting input use within producing fields.
